The Supreme Council of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Mustofa Bisri or well-known as Gus Mus expressed his deep concern about the presence of many NU based-political parties.

Gus Mus said that the various NU-based parties had clearly proven that they could not gain significant votes especially during the last legislative elections in which only the National Awakening Party (PKB) could pass the parliamentary threshold.<>

"NU-based party must be one, I have long time written about it as many NU followers wanted to set up a political party. If not, it will be in vain," Gus Mus told NU Online on Saturday (17/5), adding that without organizational unity, NU would not be able to secure significant number of supporters including in regard its political party.

"Unfortunately, the willingness of the NU ulema was not warmly responded by board members of (NU-based) parties having their own agenda," the leader of Roudlotut Thalibin Islamic boarding school (pesantren), Rembang, Central Java said.

While general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi has expected the failure of NU based political parties such as PKB and the Ulema National Awakening Party (PKNU) in this year's elections to be used as a means to introspect before taking part again in coming elections. At this point, he called on both the PKB and the PKNU to unite.

"If the PKNU can not reach the parliamentary threshold, it should ideally merge with the PKB so that the NU-based party is only one. While the United Development Party cannot do so because it is in combination with other (political) groups," Hasyim told reporters in Jakarta recently. (mkf)
