An Islamic leader said here on Thursday there was no need for people to conduct prayers for dead corrupters.
The general chairman of one of Indonesia`s largest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), KH Said Aqil Siradj, made the statement here on Thursday to remind the people of one of the organization`s decisions relating to corruption eradication.<<>;br />
"This is part of the efforts made by ulema to help fight corruption," he said.
He said the decision was the result of a meeting of NU clerics in the Pondok Gede hajj dormitory in Jakarta in 2002.
"This is the result of the discussions and consultations of the ulemas but this is not binding like a law. We just present it as it is. With regard to its implementation it is up to the government apparatus," he said.
He said the ulema made the decision in reference to Prophet Muhammad`s action of not willing to conduct prayers on the body of his fellow as he still had to pay debts to someone or owed a right of someone.
"A corrupter deliberately robs the people`s right," he said.
Said said that only those that had been convicted should be punished that way not those who had just been charged or perceived by people as corrupters.
Those who are released by the court have to be treated as usual like others, he said.
He said if the edict was agreed to be implemented technically it had to be further regulated such as whether it would be implemented according to the amount the person had corrupted. (dar)
