The Alumni Council of the Nahldatul Ulama Students Association (IPNU) considered the importance of coming NU leaders to pay more their attention to pesantren which has greatly contributed to the country's largest Muslim organization.

Chairman of the presidium of the Alumni Council of IPNU Hilmi Muhammadiyah said that their attention to the existence of the Indonesian traditional, educational institutions was a prerequisite even a must.<>

"That (attention) is the primary prerequisite. If (they) focus more on the practical politics, they do not meet our criteria," Hilmy told reporters here Thursday (3/12).

Respecting the Annual Meeting of the NU students organization that will be held in Jakarta in January 2010, Hilmy added that one of agenda of the meeting was formulating strategic measures for NU which will hold its congress in March next year.

According to Hilmy, separating NU from politics was clearly ahistorical of outside the NU historicity, saying that the NU politics should ideally be directed to propagate the state values instead of propagating politics  that is aimed solely at competing for power.

"NU should keep away from practical politics merely aimed at pursuing power. the domain of NU is moral movement," the former deputy secretary-general of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) said.

Nevertheless, his organization would not "file a lawsuit" against KH Sahal Mahfudz and especially KH Hasyim Muzadi as the leaders of PBNU for allegedly involving NU in politics as voiced by some circles either from within or outside the Nahdliyin-based organization.

"What has (so far) been conducted by Kiai Sahal and Kiai Hasyim whose their own dynamics, as for me, has been success enough in bringing NU to cope with difficult circumstances," Secretary-General of the Alumni Council of IPNU Asrorun Niam said.

He was of the opinion that the coming NU leadership should, again and again, focus more on pesantren along with its all typical characteristics such as simplicity, spirit of equality, creativity in thinking, and moderate in dealing with religious teachings.

"The infiltration of radical and liberal ideology in pesantren may happen if NU puts aside its best service to pesantren," he said. (min)
