The Indoensia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has called on its followers (Nahdliyin) to give their vote for pro-people and reliable presidential hopefuls whose moral integrity, clear track records and concern about Islam.

General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said though there was no an instruction issued by PBNU in regard with the presidential elections ahead, the  organization would always give understanding to its followers over the importance of electing the presidential candidates that fulfill the criteria.<>

"There is no a special instruction which will be issued by PBNU," Hasyim told reporters following his meeting with NU senior ulema at Langitan Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Widang Tuban East Java on Saturday (25/4).

Hasyim said the instruction had nothing to do with the fact that "NU has not nominated either presidential or vice presidential candidates" in the much-awaited presidential elections. Rather it was primarily related to the freedom of citizens in electing their president.

In addition, Hasyim said, the instruction was also related to the process of democracy which should be participated by all Indonesian citizens including Nahdliyin that have voting rights in the presidential elections.

Hasyim added that he would focus on the goals of NU in accordance with the 1926 Khittah (principles). As for him, NU was a religious social organization instead of teaching politics to its followers.

"NU has only taught its followers in accordance with the teachings of Islam. That is why, Nahdliyin should elect Indonesian presidential candidate that wants to preach and struggle for Islam, he said. (dar)
