The National Education Ministry is working on an instrument to assess teacher competence as part of efforts to improve the quality of education in Indonesia, a senior official says.
The ministry would work with education agencies to carry out assessments accross the country, the director general for the improvement of teachers and educational personnel, H. Baedhowi, said Wednesday .<>
“I hope we can try out [the instrument] this year, because it is not easy to design,” he said.
Indonesia had only recently conducted a teacher certification program to determine the teachers' qualifications based on their portfolios.
The upcoming assessment will cover not only teachers' qualifications, but also their skills and education levels, he said.
Some 360,000 teachers in Indonsia are certified, Baedhowi said. Around 200,000 certification applications are still being processed with the ministry. (jp/dar)
