Jombang, NU Online
Three figures projected to be candidates of general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) attended at a meeting held by the Jombang's NU Branch Board (PCNU) at Tambak Beras Islamic boarding school (pesantren) on Sunday.

The three were KH Sholahuddin Wahid (Gus Sholah), KH Masdar F. Mas'udi and Drs. Slamet Effendi Yusuf. The figures expressed their readiness to lead the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization.<>

In the forum taking up issues on how to purify the values of what so-called as the 1926 Khittah, the three gave explanations in dealing with the face of NU in the future. In addition, they also stressed the importance of congress as the highest forum in the Nahdliyin-based organization.

Former chairman of Ansor Youth Movement, Slamet Effendi Yusuf was of the view that NU as the country's largest Muslim organization should return to its Khittah (principle). As a result, he said, NU could not easily involve in practical politics.

The Golkar party figure explained more about the journey of NU; from its early times of establishment to the present, adding that NU ever involved in politics. Nevertheless, he could not blame NU clerics and ulema for their decision to involve NU in politics in the time.

"It'simpossible for the clerics to make decision without any consideration. I think, their decision at that time was importantly made  through considerations," Slamet said.

While, Masdar F Mas'uid focused more on the discourse in regard with the importance of NU to return to the Khittah having recently been voiced by many circles.

The alumnus of Yogyakarta's High Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) cited the discourse to return to the Khittah was ever proposed at the NU 27th congress in Asembagus, Situbondo in 1984.

He said the 1984 Khittah would substantially be different from the 'nature' of Khittah in the Makassar congress ahead, adding that the discourse to return to the 1984 Khittah was as a result of the deteriorating relationship between NU and the goventment in the time in which NU positioned itself as opposition of the New Order. Those being NU board members, he said, should be ready to face any intimidation from the ruling regime.

In the same time, the leader of Tebuireng Islamic boarding school (pesantren) KH Sholahuddin Wahid (Gus Sholah) said what is the most important for NU was how to make NU strong instead of making NU as a big organization.

Gus Sholah made the remarks for considering that there had so far been internal problems in regard with both the management and the organization that should immediately be addressed. (nam)
