Jakarta Regional Police suggested Jakarta residents who have planned to ride on motorbikes for annual mudik (exodus) leading up to Idul Fitri to avoid having more than two passengers in one motorbike.

"Travelers are also supposed not to carry overweight luggage," said Director of the Jakarta Police Traffic Comm. Royke Lumowa, recently.

Royke said families with more than one child should use public transport services. Police officers, said Royke, will take firm action against any motorcyclist who carries more than two passengers in one motorbike.

Furthermore, Royke also calls on state-run railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia to provide motorcycle coaches.

"We will take actions regarding safety factor, such as ticketing and driving suspension. In addition to motorbikes, we also discourage the use of vehicles such as pickups," said Royke.

From fasting month until Idul Fitri, there will be around 4700 personnel ensuring security and providing service to the people.

In order to provide services and maintain order, all traffic police officers are not granted Eid leave. Security for the people is more important. There is a specific timetable set for the police officers who celebrate Idul Fitri. (vn/dar)
