Presidential Candidate M Jusuf Kalla has promised to implement free education program up to senior high-school level if he is elected in the upcoming presidential race.
"Later, if I get the mandate, we will implement free education program up to senior high school," Kalla said when speaking at electoral campaign rally at Raden Intan sport stadium in eastern Jakarta, on Thursday.<>
According to Kalla, education is crucial for the improvement of the nation`s quality and progress.
"Besides, university will also be free for those who are smart but cannot afford it," he said.
In the campaign event, Kalla, currently vice president, also held a dialog with the audience.
Earlier, hundreds of people from the United Development Party (PPP), the Reform Start Party (PBR) and the National Mandate Party (PAN) expressed their support to the Jusuf Kalla and Wiranto pair.
"Thank you for your supports," Kalla, who was accompanied by his spouse, Mufidah Kalla, said.
Representatives of the University Student Executive Board (BEM) of Jabotabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, and Bekasi) earlier also read out their statement before Kalla in the campaign rally.
They asked Kalla to improve the education program, provide more scholarships, to promote local traditions as a national asset and diplomatic means to the international world, and to promote domestic products as part of efforts to be self-reliant.
In their campaign in Jakarta, Kalla and Wiranto carried out activities in five areas, namely in East, Central, North, West and South Jakarta municipalities.
"We are organizing campaign activities in five areas in order to be close to the people," he said.
The presidential election will be held on July 8, 2009. The General Elections Commission (KPU) has set schedules for closed door campaigning from June 2 to 10, and mass rallies from June 11 to July 4, 2009.
Incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the Democratic Party (PD) pairs with Boediono, is competing with other candidates, namely Jusuf Kalla and his running mate retired General Wiranto, as well as with former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate retired general Prabowo in the upcoming presidential race.
