The House of Representatives (DPR) will form a special team to supervise the spending of Rp1.2 trillion in 2008 state budget funds on the mitigation of the fate of Lapindo hot mudflow victims and the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by the disaster in Sidoarjo, East Java, a spokeman said.
"The supervisory team will consist of 50 House members," House Deputy Speaker Muhaimin Iskandar said at the legislative building here on Monday.<>
Muhaimin made the statement after attending a ceremony marking the transfer of the chairmanship of the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction in the DPR from Ida Fauziah to Effendi Choirie.
The DPR team would also supervise the performance of the Sidoarjo Mud Mitigation Board (BPLS), compensation process for the mud victims and the management of infrastructure destroyed by the mud disaster.
Muhaimin said the disbursement of Rp1.2 trillion from the 2008 state budget was not a problem because the funds would serve as bailout which had to be supervised.
"We are going to supervise everything and report to the House leader and the president," Muhaimin was quoted by Antara as saying.
In his State of the Nation Address on the 2008 draft state budget and the government`s financial notes before the House on August 16, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the Lapindo hot mud disaster in Sidoarjo had been handled by the government all along and the government had not remained quiet.
"We are not going to let the people continue to suffer from the impact of the mud disaster. We have to do something immediately to reduce their misery," Yudhoyono said. (dar)
