Jakarta, NU Online
House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki Alie disagrees with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) call on Muslims not to pray for dead corrupt people, saying no one but God who could judge someone was a sinner or not.

“As long as the corrupt people are Muslims, as a fellow Muslims we must pray for them,” Marzuki told reporters on Friday.&l<>t;br />
The controversy began when one of NU clerics, Malik Madani, proposed a ban against praying for dead corrupt people as part of the country’s efforts to fight graft. Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) deputy chairman Amidhan expressed support for the ban.

A predominantly Muslim country, Indonesia has desperately taken bold measures to uproot corruption since the start of a sweeping reform movement in 1998. (dar)
