General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi Friday called on some 250 Balong villagers in Jepara regency coming to the headquarters of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) not to be provoked related to a controversial plan to construct a nuclear power plant near Jepara's Mt. Muria.

Hasyim said, the government's willingness to press ahead with its plan to commence construction of the plant was yet to be finalized on many aspects.<>

"I hope all of you to go home calmly and never be easily provoked," Hasyim said adding that there were many whose interests in terms of the controversial plan.

Hasyim said that the PBNU had urged the government to move the proposed location of the power plant construction to another place and had coordinated with Nahdliyin being members of the House of Representatives.

"If the nuclear is needed by the government, its reactor should be moved to another place," the Caretaker of the Al Hikam Islamic boarding "Pesantren" school said.

Hasyim added that the PBNU would not involve in the "haram" verdict, declared by the Jepara's NU Branch Board. But he insisted that The plant would not be built in Muria Peninsula.

As reported by NU Online news portal, Jepara's NU clerics declared the proposed nuclear power plant 'haram,' or forbidden by Islam, as its potential dangers would very much outweigh its benefits.

The residents came Friday to the NU headquarters following a statement by KH Hasyim Muzadi, who accused the residents' protest on Sept. 1 of being exploited by a number of non-government organizations and funded by foreign donors.

"Today we'd like to prove to pak Hasyim that our (Sept. 1) action was purely triggered by our concern, and not prompted by NGOs or funded by foreign donors," Sutikno, one of Balong villagers told NU Online. (nam/dar)
