Encountering radicalism and terrorism, IPNU holds youth workshop

The Central Board of the Nahdlatul Ulama Students Association (IPNU) in collaboration with the Interfaith Cooperation Forum (ICF), Center for Pesantren Studies, Indonesian Conference on Religion and Peace (ICRP), Urbanista Organization, YMCA of Jakarta and Initiatives of Change (IoC) held the Youth Workshop in Bogor on Friday-Sunday (4-6 December 2009).
The theme of the workshop was Youth's Strong Participation in Encountering Radicalism, Extremism and Terrorism. The workshop was participated by such circles as students of senior high schools, santri of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), and activists of NGOs.<>
Chairman of IPNU Miftahul Huda said the workshop targeted such segments as students, santri, NGOs' activists for considering that they are the most effective young generations in carrying out youth programs in their own schools and institutions.
The workshop was aimed at dealing with radicalism, extremism, and terrorism having increasingly emerged especially following the bombing of JW Marriot and The Ritz Carlton hotels in Jakarta recently.
"Because almost all of the perpetrators were from youth circles vulnerable to be trapped into misleading ideologies like fundamentalism by those committing (the terrorism acts) in the name of religion as a justification," Anick HT, the executive director of ICRP said.
The materials delivered to participants, among others, were Extremism, Radicalism and Terrorism: An Overview on Global and Regional Context, Living Peaceful in Plural Society: Case Study in Aamerica which was presented by an envoy from the Indonesia's US Embassy.
In addition, there were also such materials as The Impact of Extremism, Radicalism and Terrorism for Youth: What we can Do, Youth Action in Promoting Peace: Singaporean Youth Experience, The Role of Religion to Building Trust of Strong Commitment and Effort in Encountering Extremism, Radicalism and Terrorism.
